Cameroon’s strategic absence at Luanda summit

President Paul Biya has chosen to delegate representation at the 21st extraordinary session of the African Union Conference in Luanda to Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute. The Luanda summit will prioritize strengthening Africa’s conflict prevention frameworks, with particular focus on ongoing crises in the Sahel region and Cameroon’s Anglophone separatist conflict. Prime Minister Ngute’s presence underscores Cameroon’s commitment to regional security cooperation while navigating complex domestic challenges.

Following his recent return to Yaoundé, President Biya’s decision to send his prime minister reflects both diplomatic prudence and the government’s determination to engage with continental security initiatives. The Prime Minister departed Yaoundé on Saturday for Luanda, where he will present Cameroon’s positions on regional stability.

Global diplomatic engagements continue

After concluding the AU session in Angola, Prime Minister Ngute will proceed to Belgrade, Serbia to represent President Biya at the 65th anniversary commemoration of the first Non-Aligned Movement conference. The high-level gathering, scheduled from August 31 to September 1, 2026, will bring together world leaders to reflect on the movement’s legacy and future direction.
