Bénin and Niger remove barriers to strengthen bilateral ties

During an official visit to Niamey on June 2nd, Beninese President Romuald Wadagni and Nigerien counterpart Abdourahamane Tiani reaffirmed their commitment to deepening collaboration across political, economic, scientific, and cultural spheres. The visit, extended at Tiani’s invitation, concluded with a joint statement outlining shared priorities and concrete steps to revitalize bilateral relations.

Both leaders emphasized the urgency of addressing lingering obstacles to cooperation, particularly the reopening of the Benin-Niger border—a longstanding point of contention that has stifled cross-border movement and local economic activity. To tackle this, they agreed to establish a dedicated expert committee tasked with identifying hurdles and proposing actionable solutions within a 15-day timeframe.

The discussions, which included members of both delegations, unfolded in a spirit of mutual respect and openness. Wadagni and Tiani reviewed pressing regional and international challenges while underscoring the need to align their strategies with the aspirations of their populations—security, stability, and progress.

Highlighting the historic ties between the two nations, the presidents pledged to elevate bilateral cooperation to new heights. Wadagni, sworn in just days earlier on May 24th, has made neighborly reconciliation a cornerstone of his agenda and extended an invitation for Tiani to undertake an official visit to Cotonou.
