The AS Monaco team, leading 4-1 in the 60th minute, suffered a dramatic 5-4 defeat to Strasbourg in the final game of the Ligue 1 season. This loss capped off a campaign that ended with the club in seventh position.
In their last outing of the season, Sébastien Pocognoli adjusted his tactics, switching to a 4-2-3-1 formation. Denis Zakaria partnered with Lamine Camara in midfield, while Ansu Fati operated as the attacking midfielder behind striker Folarin Balogun. Simon Adingra returned to the left wing, and the team faced Strasbourg in front of just 250 traveling supporters. From the outset, Monaco’s high press and aggressive ball recovery set the tone, reflecting Pocognoli’s game plan.
Monaco quickly took the lead. Lamine Camara intercepted a poor backpass from El Mourabet in the 10th minute and slotted home. Strasbourg pulled one back against the run of play when Martial Godo found the net in the 34th minute, but Camara restored Monaco’s advantage with a first-time strike under the crossbar just before halftime. Folarin Balogun added a fourth in the 50th minute when Ismaël Doukouré inadvertently diverted his shot into his own net. Monaco appeared to have the game firmly in hand.

However, Strasbourg staged a remarkable comeback. Diego Moreira pulled one back, Sébastian Nanasi equalized in the 72nd minute, and Godo then curled a shot past Philipp Köhn to give Strasbourg the lead with less than 20 minutes left. Paris Brunner came close to restoring parity in the 87th minute, hitting the crossbar, but it wasn’t enough. Four goals conceded in 30 minutes sealed a heartbreaking conclusion to the season.
Sébastien Pocognoli admits Monaco lacked consistency
« We started strongly and controlled much of the first half. At 4-1, some may have assumed the game was over, but unfortunately, we conceded a goal that reignited their hopes. » The Belgian coach reflected on the team’s recurring fragility in an interview after the match. « This isn’t the first time this season we’ve seen a cascade of goals after a brief lapse. Our mental resilience isn’t always where it needs to be. » He concluded, « We had all the ingredients to finish the game we were dominating, but we simply lacked the consistency required. »
A season of highs and lows concludes in disappointment
Monaco finished seventh, ending a campaign that included two seasons in the UEFA Champions League without securing European football for next term. Pocognoli acknowledged the need for reflection: « My job is to analyze what went wrong, and there’s certainly room for improvement. When I arrived, I aimed to instill an identity, group cohesion, and clear principles that I’ve maintained throughout. It’s vital to retain the positives and build on them for the future. » With the transfer window approaching, the club faces a pivotal offseason to redefine its sporting vision and restore ambition.
