Senegal’s parliament chief urges major reforms for African parliamentary union

The 85th session of the Executive Committee of the African Parliamentary Union (APU) saw a pivotal meeting this Thursday between Senegal’s National Assembly President Ousmane Sonko and Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge, Chair of the continental institution’s Executive Committee.

During their discussions, Sonko emphasized the urgent need to enhance the APU’s operational effectiveness. He outlined several reform proposals aimed at modernizing the organization’s structure and amplifying its role in shaping continental political and institutional directions.

The Senegalese leader also highlighted the critical importance of stronger alignment between APU recommendations and decisions made by the African Union. In his view, improved synchronization between these institutions would create more coherent African policies and amplify the continent’s developmental impact.

This high-level engagement reflects ongoing efforts by African leaders to strengthen parliamentary cooperation mechanisms and foster more efficient continental governance that truly serves African populations.
