As the conflict in the Middle East drives up food prices globally, Mauritania has launched a sweeping initiative to monitor and stabilize essential commodity costs. Authorities are actively clamping down on unjustified price hikes for staple goods like rice, cooking oil, and sugar to shield consumers from economic spillover effects.
nationwide surveillance rolls out across Mauritania
Teams of inspectors have been deployed across Nouakchott and are expanding their reach to regional markets as part of a broader strategy to safeguard supply chains and protect household budgets. Their mandate covers rigorous stock assessments, consumer advocacy, and the eradication of fraudulent pricing schemes.
‘Our goal is to ensure that every Mauritani enjoys fair access to food without being victimized by speculative price gouging,’ an official involved in the operation stated under condition of anonymity.
market voices reflect cautious optimism
- Aissata Bâ, a distributor handling imported goods such as Kadi bouillon cubes, jedida butter, and delia chocolate, confirmed that retail prices have remained unchanged despite external pressures. ‘We are maintaining our current pricing structures and have no intention of raising costs,’ she noted.
- Fatimetou mint Ahmed, a local shopper, echoed this sentiment: ‘Rumors persist about potential spikes, but on the ground, the cost of basic items—rice, oil, sugar, milk—has stayed flat. No sudden increases have materialized.’
- Mohamed ould Bouh, a small-scale trader, added that market conditions remain calm, with no signs of panic buying or artificial shortages.
The government has made it clear that any merchant found manipulating prices will face swift and severe penalties, including fines and business closures. In late March, Prime Minister Mokhtar Ould Diay disclosed that dozens of establishments had already been sanctioned for violating price control regulations as part of the broader campaign to curb inflationary pressures.
While the Middle East crisis continues to send shockwaves through international markets, Mauritania’s proactive stance demonstrates a commitment to shielding its citizens from economic instability at home.
