LFP discipline chief clarifies Nantes-Toulouse 0-0 decision amid fan protests

Sébastien Deneux, chair of France’s Ligue 1 disciplinary committee, defends the decision to uphold the 0-0 draw between Nantes and Toulouse, which was abandoned after fan protests on May 17. Toulouse’s club has criticized the ruling and is considering an appeal.
The final-day clash between Nantes and Toulouse on May 17 was cut short after Nantes supporters stormed the pitch in the 22nd minute. Toulouse were unhappy when the Ligue 1 disciplinary panel decided to finalize the score as a 0-0 draw rather than awarding them a 3-0 technical win or ordering a replay. The Toulouse club released a statement expressing frustration, questioning what more they could have done to resume the match and warning of potential future consequences from such a decision.
“We regret that the game could not proceed under normal circumstances and question what concrete actions the club could have taken to allow the match to resume. We remain vigilant about the potential for such rulings to encourage future misconduct.”
Toulouse would have preferred a 3-0 forfeit victory, but Sébastien Deneux, chair of the Ligue 1 disciplinary committee, has addressed the controversy surrounding the decision.
Why was a 0-0 draw chosen over forcing Nantes to forfeit? New disciplinary regulations introduced two years ago offer committees greater flexibility. Previously, abandoned matches could only result in a forfeiture or a replay, both starting from 0-0. The updated rules aim to separate sporting consequences from disciplinary sanctions.
In this case, the committee determined that the match had no sporting implications at the time of abandonment. Nantes were already relegated, and Toulouse’s final position—whether 9th with 45 or 47 points—would have remained unchanged regardless of the outcome.
“Under no circumstances should clubs or their supporters be allowed to influence the outcome of a match through misconduct.”
Why not award Toulouse a technical victory? The disciplinary committee’s decision reflects an effort to prevent teams from benefiting from opponents’ misconduct. In this instance, it would have been illogical to grant Toulouse a win when the match was abandoned at 0-0.
Could this ruling set a dangerous precedent? Deneux firmly rejects this concern. He emphasizes that the decision was made under unique circumstances where the match held no sporting stakes. In any other scenario, he insists, a different outcome would have been reached. The committee remains unwavering in its stance: clubs and supporters must never be permitted to manipulate match results through abandonments.
